Capital District Microscopy and Microanalysis Society

Annual Business Meeting

January 18, 2006

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order at 7:20 PM at the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna by Treasurer Kathy Dunn (due to late arrival of President Jodi Reeves). The meeting was held following a buffet dinner. The participants were welcomed and the meeting agenda was presented. Thirty participants were in attendance.

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Vice-President LeTarte was delayed, so Treasurer Dunn recapped our three previous meetings in 2005: a talk on x-ray microscopy by Greg Denbeaux of Albany NanoTech, held at SuperPower on April 21; a talk by Michael Notis of Lehigh on Archeometallurgy, held at SuperPower on June 2; and the November 15 meeting with TMS at RPI including a dinner, a poster session, and a talk by Bruce Watson on "Material Science of the Earth". After her arrival Vice-President LeTarte solicited suggestions for the 2006 meetings, and reminded us that because of the change in the time our our Business Meeting from December to January, we had no Business Meeting in calendar year 2005. She thanked GE for helping to arrange the 2006 Business Meeting

TREASURER'S REPORT

Treasurer Dunn thanked the current corporate sponsors, GE, Bruker, and Thermo. Special thanks went to GE for a generous donation of $500 for this annual business meeting. An effort will be made to increase and retain corporate sponsorship, and suggestions for enhancing corporate benefits were solicited.

EMERITUS MEMBER APPOINTMENT

Ernie Hall introduced Sterling Newberry, and presented him a plaque as CDMMS' first Emeritus Member, and gave a talk on Sterling's accomplishments in development work in electron optics at GE, where he was responsible for an early electrostatic TEM and the first commercial x-ray microscope. Sterling started work in electron optics as a graduate student, working on one of first electron microscopes in North America. He is a Charter Member of MSA, and after leaving GE went on to form the Microbit Company that developed electron-optical data storage methods. Sterling is still active in research involving x-ray microscopy.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business, the business meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM , and Ernie Hall gave a brief talk on microscopy and microanalysis at GE, as a prelude to the tour of the new laboratories.
