Following is an article by Craig Robertson of the GE Global Research Center. We adopted Craig's design for our logo at the September 26th, 2002 meeting.
Thank you all for voting for the design I submitted. This is the thinking that went into my design of the logo for the CDMMS.
To answer some questions that came up about the "Half Moon"ship and why I picked it, consider the following:
The Half Moon was the ship commanded by Henry Hudson in his exploration of North America in 1609.
Hudson sailed from Amsterdam and explored the coastline as far south as
Virginia with a crew of about twenty. In particular, he explored the river
named after him as far north as present day Albany. He returned to England
and the ship returned to the Netherlands. A replica of the Half Moon
was built at the Snow Dock in Albany, New York, and launched in June of
1989. Currently, she is a regular visitor to the Port of Albany during the
Summer and Fall. For more information try looking at the following site: Half Moon
