(Micro-) Probing the Causes of Supervolcano Eruptions

Geologists have long recognized that compositional variation in minerals from volcanic rocks record important information about processes and conditions in pre-eruption magma chambers. For some of the largest and most devastating volcanic systems, the mineral quartz has proven especially valuable in this regard, despite the factt hat quartz is composed almost entirely (>99.99%) of SiO2. Using an electron microprobe equipped with a cathodoluminescence detector, however, it is now possible to characterize micron-scale compositional variations in the element titanium (at concentrations <100ppm), which can in turn be used to document changes in temperature of crystallization, and ultimately - of the causes of supervolcano eruptions!

During the business meeting, the 2008 officers will be elected. There will be discussion about bylaws changes next year, concerning term of office and the nominating committee
